See what Catrin Lewis, Finance Level 2 AAT  Apprentice at Hywel Dda University Health Board says…

Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to do an apprenticeship with NHS Wales Finance?

Catrin: To just go for it. Deciding what to do for a career at such a young age is hard, but with the support and opportunities given to you by the NHS, you learn so much about yourself. I went into this apprenticeship not knowing exactly what career I wanted yet 3 months later I’m determined to work my way up the finance route within the NHS!

Q: What do you enjoy most about working for NHS Wales Finance?

Catrin: Feeling supported and welcomed. Also knowing that if I had any issue, it would be dealt with professionally. Also the fact that working hours are flexible and my Health Board offers hybrid working which is where you are able to work in office some days and then working from home other days. The hybrid working and attending college once a week means my week is varied and I rarely ever get bored as I love my job.

Q: Would you recommend undertaking a Finance Apprenticeship to others?

Catrin: Yes I would recommend, especially if you love numbers and solving problems. It’s a great choice if you want to go down the finance route because the learn and earn scheme speaks for itself. The endless opportunities and the amount of experience you gain is incredible.

Hear from Sam Stephens, who has recently finished his Apprenticeship and secured a job with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board…

Q: What made you pick an apprenticeship Sam?

Sam: I knew University wouldn’t be for me, and I wanted to get out and earn myself some money whilst also developing skills and gaining experience within a professional environment. For anyone who is feeling that University may not be for them and they want to get into the Finance world, get some grounding and build foundations for an excellent career, I cannot recommend this enough. I have absolutely zero regrets and wouldn’t change anything.

Q: What did you do in your apprenticeship?

Sam: I have worked in numerous areas of the Finance sector, and a wide range of teams within the Finance Department at Cardiff & Vale UHB. This has given me some really valuable experience and grounding, and I have built some strong relationships along the way. Alongside this, I have completed my AAT qualification which gave me the degree equivalent and no debt!

Q: What was it like doing an apprenticeship with NHS Wales Finance?

Sam: Choosing to go down the Apprenticeship route was certainly the best decision I have made. I have thoroughly enjoyed the scheme, and couldn’t have asked for better scheme leaders. I felt valued and listened to the whole way, and had absolutely unbelievable support throughout the entirety, and I know they will continue to support me through my future endeavours.
